21 Grams (2003)

A traffic accident connects three strangers; Paul Rivers (Sean Penn), who is dying of a heart condition, Christina Peck (Naomi Watts), a former addict but a wife and a mother now, and Jack Jordan (Benicio Del Toro), a born-again ex-convict and a father.

Long before Alejandro Iñárritu was hailed as a talented director, he showed his skill with the fragmented technique. He glides back and forth in time carrying the viewers in his eddying, tumbling narrative currents. You might get dizzy, but Iñárritu’s deft touch will lead you to piece together the puzzle and the powerful performances (Watts & Del Toro were nominated for Oscar) will grip you.

How many lives do we live? How many times do we die? They say we all lose 21 grams… at the exact moment of our death. Everyone. And how much fits into 21 grams? How much is lost? When do we lose 21 grams? How much goes with them? How much is gained? How much is gained? Twenty-one grams. The weight of a stack of five nickels. The weight of a hummingbird. A chocolate bar. How much did 21 grams weigh?
