Story

Sergei “Polack” Kowalski (Franco Nero) is a Polish mercenary hired by Paco Roman (Tony Musante), a mine worker turned revolutionary, to fight against the Mexican government, while being pursued by the Mexican army and ‘Curly’ (Jack Palance).

Review

As the film is a Zapata western –a subgenre of spaghetti westerns set during the Mexican Revolution – action is expected. But the comic scenes between the idealist Paco and the cynical Polack are more fun. Although not Sergio Corbucci’s most known work, it was a source of inspiration to Tarantino who used Ennio Morricone’s theme in Kill Bill: Vol. 2 (2004).

Καθώς το φιλμ είναι ένα γουέστερν Ζαπάτα –μία υποκατηγορία των σπαγγέτι γουέστερν για την Μεξικανική Επανάσταση-  η δράση είναι αναμενόμενη. Αλλά οι κωμικές σκηνές ανάμεσα στον ιδεαλιστή Πάκο και τον κυνικό Πόλακ είναι πιο διασκεδαστικές. Παρόλο που δεν είναι η πιο γνωστή δουλειά του Σέρτζιο Κορμπούτσι, υπήρξε πηγή έμπνευσης για τον Ταραντίνο που χρησιμοποίησε την μουσική του Ένιο Μορικόνε στην ταινία Kill Bill: Vol. 2 (2004).

Story

Giacomo Casanova (Donald Sutherland), a Venetian nobleman, travels around Europe in search of the ideal woman. Among his sexual conquests are Henriette (Tina Aumont), the love of his life, and Rosalba (Leda Lojodice), a life-sized mechanical doll.

Review

A woman tells Casanova “You cannot talk of love without using funereal images” which sums up the movie’s sad tone. Fellini, who based his script on Casanova’s autobiography Storia della Mia Vita (The Story of My Life), associates sex with cynicism instead of romance. That is why Casanova’s endless quest for the perfect woman brings him closer to his demise.

Μία γυναίκα λέει στον Καζανόβα «Δεν μπορείς να μιλήσεις για αγάπη χωρίς να χρησιμοποιήσεις πένθιμες εικόνες» και αυτή η φράση συνοψίζει την στενόχωρη ατμόσφαιρα της ταινίας. Ο Φελίνι, ο οποίος βασίστηκε στην αυτοβιογραφία του Καζανόβα Η Ιστορία της Ζωής μου, συνδέει το σεξ με τον κυνισμό αντί για τον έρωτα. Για αυτό και η αέναη αναζήτηση του Καζανόβα για την τέλεια γυναίκα τον φέρνει πιο κοντά στο τέλος του.

Review

When an assassination happens in the first minutes, you expect tension. But not in this movie. A script with lots of loose ends that never really tie up, actors who are bored, but with heavy action (underwater fights, car chase, explosions). Angie Harmon insists on acting, which she is good at, but is pretty much irrelevant here.

Όταν μία δολοφονία συμβαίνει στα πρώτα λεπτά, περιμένεις ένταση. Αλλά όχι σε αυτή την ταινία. Ένα σενάριο με πολλά ανοιχτά μέτωπα που ποτέ δεν ξεκαθαρίζουν, ηθοποιοί που βαριούνται, αλλά με αρκετή δράση (υποβρύχια μάχη, καταδίωξη με αυτοκίνητα, εκρήξεις). Η Άντζι Χάρμον επιμένει να παίζει, και το κάνει καλά, αλλά εδώ είναι αδιάφορο.

Story

Tom Dobbs (Robin Williams), a comedic talk show host, decides to run for President of the US and wins. But his victory is due to a voting computer glitch and Eleanor Green (Laura Linney), one programmer, wants to reveal the truth.

Review

Unlike Barry Levinson’s previous work –Good Morning Vietnam (1987), Wag the Dog (1997)-this political satire fails to be sharp. The plot is rather messy; it swerves from thriller (Eleanor’s life is threatened) to romance (Tom falls for her) with a glimpse of comedy. Robin Williams is in his element as a quick-witted comedian, but the script provides just a few good punch lines.

Σε αντίθεση με τις προηγούμενες ταινίες του Μπάρι Λέβινσον –Καλημέρα Βιετνάμ (1987), Ο Πρόεδρος ένα Ροζ Σκάνδαλο κι ένας Πόλεμος (1997)- αυτή η πολιτική σάτιρα αποτυγχάνει να είναι αιχμηρή. Αντίθετα έχει μία ακανόνιστη πλοκή: λίγο θρίλερ (η ζωή της Έλινορ απειλείται), λίγο ρομάντσο (ο Τομ την ερωτεύεται) και κωμωδία. Ο Ρόμπιν Γουίλιαμς βρίσκεται στο στοιχείο του σαν ένας ευφυής κωμικός, αλλά το σενάριο εξαντλείται σε μερικές αστείες ατάκες.
