Story

Quoyle (Kevin Spacey), a single father after Petal (Cate Blanchett) -his floozy wife- died in a car crash, is persuaded by his aunt Agnis (Judy Dench) to move to their family home at Newfoundland; there Quoyle meets Wavey (Julianne Moore), also a single parent.

Review

It is a pity to have such good material (talented actors, Pulitzer Prize-winning book) and still create a dull film. Kevin Spacey’s Quoyle is timid and sad-eyed throughout the film, failing to show the protagonist’s major transformation from ink man to journalist, from sad to happy and eventually more confident. Cate Blanchett is unrecognizable as Petal.

Είναι κρίμα παρά το καλό υλικό (ταλαντούχοι ηθοποιοί, βιβλίο βραβευμένο με Πούλιτζερ) να δημιουργείς ένα βαρετό φιλμ. Ο Κόιλ του Κέβιν Σπέισι είναι δειλός και θλιμμένος σε όλη την διάρκεια της ταινίας αποτυγχάνοντας να αποτυπώσει την ριζική μεταμόρφωση του πρωταγωνιστή, από τυπογράφος – δημοσιογράφος, από δυστυχισμένος – ευτυχισμένος και τελικά με περισσότερη αυτοπεποίθηση. Η Κέιτ Μπλάνσετ είναι αγνώριστη ως Πέταλ.

Review

The films are usually based on the simplified formula of heroes and villains. The great thing about this movie is that there aren’t any because everyone is good and bad. True to the spirit of the same-titled book it was adapted from, the director does not take sides in this conflict. He wants us to understand and not judge these tragic characters who lie in the core of this heart-breaking movie.

Στις ταινίες συνήθως υπάρχουν οι καλοί και οι κακοί ήρωες. Το υπέροχο αυτής της ταινίας είναι ότι δεν υπάρχουν, καθώς το καλό και το κακό ενυπάρχει στον καθένα. Πιστός στο πνεύμα του ομώνυμου βιβλίου που βασίστηκε, ο σκηνοθέτης δεν παίρνει θέση στην διαμάχη. Θέλει να καταλάβουμε κι όχι να κρίνουμε τους τραγικούς χαρακτήρες, που είναι ο πυρήνας αυτής της σπαραξικάρδιας ταινίας.

Story

Micky (Tchéky Karyo) robs a bank with the hope to win his girlfriend Mary (Sophie Marceau) back from a vicious gang of gangsters. On the train to Paris, Micky meets and befriends Léon (Francis Huster) who later falls in love with Mary.

Review

The word “mad” in the international title sums up the craziness of the movie. Throughout the movie the actors are hyperactive, shout nonstop and destroy. Except of the movie’s opening scene, a heist with four men in Disney characters masks, directed as if a musical number, and the existence of a love triangle, the rest of what is going on is up for discussion.

Η λέξη «τρέλα» στον διεθνή τίτλο [στα ελληνικά Ερωτική Τρέλα] συνοψίζει την τρέλα της ταινίας. Καθόλη την ταινία οι ηθοποιοί είναι υπερκινητικοί, φωνάζουν διαρκώς και καταστρέφουν. Εκτός από την αρχική σκηνή, μία ληστεία με τέσσερις άντρες με μάσκες ήρωες της Ντίσνει, σκηνοθετημένη σαν μουσικό κομμάτι, και την ύπαρξη ενός ερωτικού τριγώνου, το τι συμβαίνει στην ταινία είναι ανοιχτό προς συζήτηση.

Story

Byron Tiller (Andy Garcia), a failed writer, unable to support his family, takes the escort job offered by Luther Fox (Mick Jagger) and meets Andrea (Olivia Williams), wife of Tobias Alcott (James Coburn), an aging Pulitzer Prize-winning novelist.

 Review

To my surprise, rock star Mick Jagger can also act! In this modern version of the Faust legend, Jagger plays Luther in a wicked but nonchalant way. James Coburn also gave a wonderful performance balancing melancholy and sardonic wit. The script’s attention to dialogue gives depth to the emotional complexity of the characters, but the story is not plausible.

Προς έκπληξή μου, ο ροκ σταρ Μικ Τζάγκερ μπορεί και να παίξει! Σε αυτή την μοντέρνα εκδοχή του μύθου του Φάουστ, ο Τζάγκερ παίζει τον Λούθορ με έναν διαβολικό και συνάμα αδιάφορο τρόπο. Επίσης, ο Τζέιμς Κόμπερν έδωσε μία αξιόλογη ερμηνεία ισορροπώντας ανάμεσα στην μελαγχολία και το σαρδόνιο χιούμορ. Η έμφαση του σεναρίου στον διάλογο προσδίδει βάθος στην συναισθηματική πολυπλοκότητα των χαρακτήρων, αλλά η ιστορία δεν είναι αληθοφανής.
